Guys, essences are such a polarizing skincare step. A lot of people skip them entirely, while others can’t live without them once they find their perfect match. I used to think all essences were pretty much identical — lightweight, fast-absorbing, just a simple quick step in skincare.
But after testing out the Safi Crystal Essence and SK-II Treatment Essence back to back, I realized how different essences can truly be. Formula, texture, and even the whole skincare experience they bring are totally unique. Both are designed to smooth skin and boost complexion radiance, yet they deliver completely different skincare vibes and results.
Safi Crystal Essence
Price: Around $15–$22 This brightening essence totally exceeded my expectations. It’s way more refreshing than I thought a budget brightening essence would be. It has a light, watery base with a subtle silky touch when gliding on the skin. It soaks in super fast with zero sticky residue, making it my go-to pick for hot, humid weather.

What I love most about it is how gentle and wearable it is for daily use. Some brightening skincare formulas are potent and can feel harsh when layered with other products, but this one is mild and skin-friendly all year round. Its scent is clean and light too, nothing heavy or fermented like some luxury essences.
The best part is its friendly price tag. It’s so affordable that I never hold back from using a generous amount every time, which makes my daily skincare routine super easy and stress-free.
SK-II Treatment Essence
Price: Around $99–$185 SK-II’s iconic essence is a total opposite experience right from the first application. It has an ultra-watery, pure liquid texture, but leaves a noticeably richer, more nourishing finish on the skin. Using this essence never feels like a rushed skincare step — it’s more like a relaxing daily skincare ritual.

With consistent use, the improvements in skin texture are super obvious. My skin feels smoother and more refined over time. After several weeks of sticking to it, my skin condition became much more balanced and clear, which was such a big help during periods of rough, uneven skin texture.
To sum up my honest experience: If I want a casual, everyday essence that I can use liberally without guilt, Safi is absolutely perfect. But if I’m chasing that high-end, polished, luxurious skin glow and long-term skin stability, SK-II brings that one-of-a-kind premium skincare experience that no budget essence can replicate.
